Which is the Best Value Thai Food in Penang?
I love Thai food and have tried most Thai restaurants in Penang. About 2 weeks ago, I had a hankering for Thai food and was scrounging for it and discovered this place located near Weld Quay called “Ghee Seng Tomyam Seafood”. After trying the food here, I must say that most Thai restaurants in Penang are overcharging! It is the best value Thai restaurant in Penang I must say!
It is a sundry shop cum restaurant with a kitchen and many helpers. The place is more like a coffee shop no frills no aircon. It doesn’t look big from the outside but when you walk in, it has extension to the back and the side as well, you’ll be surprised that there are more than 20 tables and they are all full! You’ll soon understand why.
We ordered their White Tomyam Prawns (must try!) which came with 5 fresh prawns, Kangkung Sambal and Mango Salad. I love the white Tomyam soup, different from the usual red Tomyam. This hot sour soup comes with lots of lemon grass, chilly paddies, chopped garlic, ginger and lemon juice. The taste is just great, we finished the soup! Best of all, these 3 dishes with 2 plates of rice only cost RM19.40 for two people!
Last weekend, I went back again with my family and this time with 4 people, we ordered White Tomyam Prawn (again, yes I love it), papaya salad, fish curry and fried vegetable with shrimp! Everyone enjoyed the meal so much. We were so pleasantly surprised again that 4 hearty dishes and 4 plates of rice only came up to RM35.40 (USD10) !
I am showing the pictures of the dishes below and their respective prices. The bill was only RM35.40, we ordered 4 plates of rice, so it means one plate of rice only cost RM0.70! Oh man, aren’t we lucky that we can find such cheap and great food in Penang? I am pretty sure that other restaurants would be charging almost double of its price for these dishes!
White Tomyam Soup (MUST TRY) with 6 Fresh Prawns, only RM8!
Fish curry with tomatoes and lady fingers, only RM11!
Papaya salad, RM8.
Fried vegetables with garlic and shrimps, only RM6.
I know next question you are going to ask me is where exactly is this place? OK from QEII going to Jelutong highway direction, you go straight and pass by jetty, Lim jetty, Chew jetty, Tan jetty, Lee Jetty, etc on your left until you come to the first block of flats on your left. You’ll see “Ghee Seng Tomyam Seafood” signboard for you to turn in left. After you turn in, about 5 shops away on your right, that’s the Best Value Thai Food place in Penang.

Hey Tom, great to hear from you! Didn’t know any Thai hawker place except there are quite a number of stalls at Midlands One Stop on Burma road. This place on Weld Quay is cheap and good. Try their white tomyam soup and the fried crab yam balls, really yummy!
How did you find me? You were looking for Thai food in Penang eh? I ranked #1 in that search, he he!
Another good Thai restaurant is on Abu Siti Lane called Maa Roi, their lemon steam fish is yummy. The only thing I dislike about the place is they charge 80 cents for a glass of water which is offered free in most places :-p Or if you want some nice ambiance and a bit more pricey, you could try Chok Dee on Burma Road about 10 blocks away from 1926 hotel, i.e. Bleng’s in-law’s place which is also a popular Thai restaurant.
