Cheap and Good Food in Penang Mainland
If you’re bored with Penang island food and would like to try something different in the mainland, check out Ong Cheng Huat seafood restaurant at Bagan Lallang in Butterworth.
Fried spring chicken
The last time I went to this restaurant was during my college days with my friend VC, recently I went there again to reminisce the good old days. It was a weekend after lunch time and since we already had lunch, we only ordered their famous specialties, i.e, fried spring chicken, fried poh piah, stir-fried vegetable and tuak (coconut alcoholic beverage).
Fried poh piah
The spring chicken is so crispy and tasty and so is the fried poh piah that goes so well with the chilly sauce. After over a decade, the taste of the food hasn’t changed and the price is still extremely good. For these 3 dishes and 1 bottle of tuak, it is only RM25.
Tuak served in a 100 plus bottle.
After that, we just hung around at Sunway carnival to watch a movie. Watched “Where Got Ghost” and had a good laugh. The rojak in the movie gave me a hankering for rojak after the show.
Lok-lok style Pantai Fruit Rojak Stall
In the end, we went to the coastal road and found lok-lok style Rojak. There are 3 stalls in that area, so we just picked the cleanest Chinese stall with the most customers.
Dip into the rojak sauce as much as you want.
Taste is pretty good and the rojak sauce is very thick with lots of peanuts. Each stick costs only RM0.40.
Try these when you happen to be in Butterworth next time.

The Bagan Lallang Ong Cheng Huat stall is not as cheap as before.

Hi Jason, did you order anything fancy like fish or seafood? RM25 for 3 dishes and a bottle of tuak is considered pretty cheap to me, a bit hard to get this kind of pricing on the island
